En 2013, el servicio de Radiofísica del Hospital Provincial de Castellón fue el primero en España y uno de los pocos de Europa, en disponer de un avanzado sistema de planificación computerizada que posibilita la administración de tratamientos de radioterápia, esto es, que permite a los especialistas modificar el tratamiento de radioterapia en función de los cambios anatómicos que presente el paciente durante el transcurso de las sesiones y que resulta más eficaz y menos agresiva con los pacientes, disminuyendo la dosis de radiación sobre los tejidos sanos cercanos.  

A raíz del uso de esta técnica, dos de nuestros investigadores: Agustín Santos (radiofísico hospitalario) y Rodrigo Muelas (oncólogo radioterápico), han viajado a Estocolmo (Suecia) al V Congreso de Usuarios organizado por Raystation (empresa creadora de este sistema), para exponer los resultados de los estudios de investigación (desarrollados por – entre otros profesionales – el radiofísico Rafael Garcia) realizados en pacientes de cáncer de próstata con esta técnica. Además, participan junto a colegas de otros países europeos en la elaboración de un protocolo que concrete las indicaciones y pasos a seguir para la aplicación de la radioterapia adaptativa.

In 2013, the Medical Physics Department of the Provincial Hospital of Castellon was the first in Spain and one of the few in Europe to have an advanced system of computerized planning that allows an adaptive radiotherapy treatment for cancer, which allows specialists to modify treatment radiotherapy according to the anatomical changes that the patient present during the course of the sessions and that is more effective and less aggressive with patients, decreasing the dose of radiation on healthy tissue nearby.

Following the use of this technique, two of our researchers: Agustin Santos (hospital physicist) and Rodrigo Muelas (radiation oncologist), have traveled to Stockholm (Sweden) to V User Meeting organized by RayStation (creator of this system) to present the results of research studies conducted on patients with prostate cancer with this technique. They also participate with colleagues from other European countries in the development of a protocol indications and concrete steps for the implementation of adaptive radiation therapy.
